MREA Receives $3.3 Million Award!

We did it! The MREA Recently Received a DOE Grant to Train Instructors Throughout the Midwest.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced late last week that it had selected the MREA to provide solar energy training and resources to technical and community college instructors across the Midwest.

With $3.3 million in funding over five years, we will work with training partners in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, and Minnesota to offer instructor training institutes, provide instructional resources, and organize a network of Midwest solar training programs.

This effort is part of a national initiative by the DOE, in which eight other organizations have been funded to advance similar efforts in other regions of the country. The trainings and resources will help advance instruction about solar electric and solar heating and cooling technologies, increasing the quality and availability of training programs across the U.S.

Dr. Tehri Parker, our executive director, is excited about this ‘new era’ of solar training. “Training in solar electric and solar thermal technologies belongs in every technical and community college across the country. It should be a fundamental component of degree programs that focus on electrical engineering, HVAC, plumbing, and related fields.”

We offer courses in solar electric, solar thermal, small wind energy, and green building at our training center, the ReNew the Earth Institute, here in Custer, Wisconsin. The MREA has 38 instructors that serve the more than 2,000 people a year that participate in our nationally accredited training programs. The award from the DOE will allow us to strengthen our partnerships throughout the Midwest and serve the growing demand for instructor training.

Our Activities
  • The Energy Fair: Each summer, on the third weekend in June, the MREA hosts the Energy Fair. This event is the world's longest running energy education event. It offers programs for all ages and knowledge levels. The Fair is powered by working renewable energy systems.
  • ReNew the Earth Institute: The ReNew the Earth Institute is the MREA's demonstration site and educational facility. The Institute has working renewable energy systems (wind, PV, solar hot water, masonry stove), and educational displays. Visitors to the Institute can take guided and self-guided tours of the facilities and renewable energy systems.
  • Workshops: The MREA hosts a series of educational and hands-on workshops throughout the year. These workshops vary in length from 1 day to 2 weeks. They are instructed by experienced renewable energy experts in small classroom settings and on site installation locations. Workshop participants come from varied backgrounds including homeowners, builders, educators, architects, engineers, and others. The MREA offers over 250 workshops per year. Participants can receive Continue Education Units for attending workshops. Some scholarships are available.
  • Wisconsin Solar Tour: As a chapter of the American Solar Energy Society, the MREA hosts an October tour of homes and businesses throughout Wisconsin. Buildings on the tour demonstrate renewable energy systems, energy efficient construction, and alternative/green building techniques.
  • Newsletter: ReNews is a quarterly newsletter that includes articles on energy issues, book reviews, a calendar of upcoming events, and general information on the MREA and its activities.

Our Members
The MREA currently has over 3200 active members from around the world representing 39 states and 3 foreign countries. There are a variety of membership levels designed to accommodate different needs and budgets - from students to businesses. Join the MREA today.

Our Funding
The MREA attempts to maintain a diverse income stream. Funding for our work comes from program fees, grants, donations, and independent contracts. All donations are welcome, and can be earmarked for specific projects.

We believe that corporate support is a vital ingredient in promoting our agenda. Even though MREA's positions or programs are developed internally and are not influenced by our corporate sponsors, our credibility may be questioned by people who perceive such contributions as an expression of mutual endorsement. Our credibility is our most important asset. For that reason the MREA has developed a Corporation Donation Policy.

Corporate Donation Policy
The Midwest Renewable Energy Association accepts contributions from businesses, individuals, and foundations to carry out its vital mission. The acceptance by the MREA of such contributions shall:

  • not limit or restrict the MREA's actions or policies;
  • not limit or restrict the ability of the MREA to carry out any of its activities; and
  • not be considered an endorsement by the MREA of the donor.

MREA also receives funding from Focus on Energy , 800-762-7077. Focus on Energy is a public-private partnership offering energy information and services to energy utility customers throughout Wisconsin .
