MREA - Midwest ReNewable Energy Association

This 3.6 kW Jacobs wind turbine provides DC (direct current) power that is converted to household 110 Volt 60 Hz alternating current (AC) by an inverter.

If building loads are less than turbine output, the excess is sold the utility.

This 3.6 kW Jacobs wind turbine was manufactured in 1942 from the same sturdy design originally produced in the 1930's. By the time this particular machine came off the assembly line, the design had already seen a decade of reliable service across the American West.

Before reinstallation on the 100' (30 M) free-standing tower at the ReNew the Earth Institute, it was completely refurbished with new windings, new blades, new bearings, and a fresh coat of paint.

The blades are made of Sitka Spruce, which is prized for its strength, flexibility, and light weight. The blades sweep a 14-foot (4.3 M) diameter circle.
